DSWD distributes P127.7M cash aid to fisherfolk affected by Mindoro oil spill
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) began on Thursday the distribution of cash assistance worth P127.7 million to the fisherfolk affected by the massive oil spill off Oriental Mindoro.
According to the DSWD, about 14,291 individuals from the informal and formal fishing sectors from the municipalities of Baco, Bansud, Bongabong, Bulalacao, Gloria, Mansalay, Naujan, Pinamalayan, Roxas, San Teodoro, Socorro, Victoria, and Calapan City are set to receive financial aid under the Emergency Cash Transfer (ECT) program.
The cash payout started in Roxas town, benefiting 233 fisherfolk.
“While the province is slowly returning to normalcy, the Department continues to provide various interventions, including the provision of family food packs and cash assistance, to the oil spill-affected fisherfolk as part of its early recovery and rehabilitation phase,” DSWD Assistant Secretary Romel Lopez said in a statement.
On Monday, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources recommended keeping the fishing ban in the towns of Pola, Pinamalayan, and Naujan as traces of oil slicks remain in the coastal municipalities. —VBL, GMA Integrated News
